I think a week ago, I locked Melanie and I out of the car and house. Brian came all the way from work to unlock our doors. While we waited for Brian to come, Melanie and I had a nice walk in the neighborhood. All things considered, a very mello situation.
Well, not today!
I closed the doors & realized my error... Melanie was in the car, but not strapped in. The engine was running and the defrost/heat was on. A cup of hot coffee was sitting in the cupholder (a tasty treat Melanie sometimes gets to sip).
I went across the street & called 911 while my neighbor went back to our driveway to watch Melanie. Once 911 said they were on their way, I went back to the driveway. My neighbor said Melanie was fine but didn't like her peeking in the car.
I stood out of the window, encouraging Melanie to play with the buttons on the door frame, at least to keep her occupied so she wouldn't touch the gearshift. Once she lifted the coffee, but I yelled at her to put it back.
Then she rested her little hand on the key in the ignition, and smiled as she turned the car off. WOWOWOWWOWW!!! I jumped up an down and squealed with delight. She smiled so big - she knew she did something good!
Then the firemen came, and she started crying again with them peeking into the window. So the fireman asked me to keep her occupied in the passenger side while they tried to jimmy the lock on the driver side. So I was talking to her on the passenger side (where she was sitting), encouraging her to press the door buttons but not too worried about it. And you know what she did? That little squirt took the door handle in her little hands and opened the car door!!
Well, I scooped her up, showered her with kisses & praise. She gave all the firemen a high-five & then we watched them drive off.
Melanie is so darn smart! And it's obvious she's not getting it from me...
