Facebook Posts

Catching up the ol' blog to the facebook posts (excluding pictures) 8/6/12: When You Know You Need to Help Your Partner: "No honey, don't pull him, he's not a wishbone... don't pull his legs." 8/7/12: Me: I love you, Melanie. Melanie: I love Daddy. Me: You don't love me? Melanie: No, I love Daddy. 8/13/12: Reflecting on a precious moment yesterday: Melanie was clowning around with her Mr. Potato Head and Devin was just watching her & laughing. Seeing the two of them interact made me a little misty eyed! :) They're going to be best friends for life. I love that - and I love my siblings! :) 8/16/12: As I dressed Devin in a onesie made for a 9 month old, something finally dawned on me. When I was younger, it bothered me when tall men dated/married petite women because it shrunk the dating pool for tall women. Now I realize that tall men and tall women make giant babies. Brian should have married a Kristen Bell (5'1") while I should've married Gene Kelly (5'7"). 8/22/12: I'm such a parent. I was explaining a situation at work and I was so tempted to finish it with, "...and the next thing I knew, my donkey fell in your waffle hole. Right? Who's with me?" 8/24/12: Melanie asked for music this morning, so I flipped through the channels until she tells me to stop. Her pick: Rage Against the Machine. 8/28/12: I'm trying to teach Melanie how to spit out her toothpaste. Me: (to Brian) How do you teach a child how to spit? Brian: I'm trying to teach you how not to! ba-doom-ching! Devin just rolled over from his belly to his back!! Tami told me he's done it a few times at daycare, but I wanted to wait to see it for myself. :) My big, strong boy! :) He's now on his belly again, and I'm looming over him with the camera on standby. 9/1/12: "The Wiz": Scares me. Entertains Melanie. So, I suffer in silence. Actual dialogue this morning: "Melanie, eat your toast. If you eat this piece of toast, you can have more bacon. Don't eat it all at once. If you spit up the toast, you won't have any bacon. If you hide the toast, you won't get any more bacon. If you drop the toast, you won't get any more bacon." 9/3/12: Yup, I'm going to facebrag: Devin slept from 11:00pm to 7:30am today! :D Whoo-hoo!! :)

Devin at Four Months

Devin is everything you would want in a baby. He's happy all the time, he barely cries, if you look at him & smile - he'll smile back at you with a gummy grin. He's long & chubby - his toes are almost peeking over the carseat carrier and he weighs about 17 pounds. He's still got dimples on his finger knuckles and rubber-band wrists. And those cheeks! Oh my goodness those cheeks! His dark brown hair is short & soft and I'm pretty sure he's going to end up with my eyes. His eyebrows came in dark brown too, so he's definitely not going to get his daddy's red hair. Devin sleeps all night, going down at 9ish, I wake up on my own & feed him around 3ish (he knows just what to do - even though he's still sleeping) and then he's up around 7ish. Such a blessing! Now, the good part - today Devin rolled over on his own and he held his own bottle at daycare! I tried to see if he would roll over for me tonight, but no such luck. Once he does, I'll be sure to take video of it to share! That's all for now - I'm going to go cuddle!

Facebook Posts

Here is a collection of Facebook posts about my sweet little'uns while I was on maternity leave.  Apparently for the first month of Devin's life, I only posted pictures of him & not status updates.  That makes sense, I guess - he was just a newborn & didn't do anything terribly exciting.  :)

05/02/12: So apparently we're potty training now. Melanie, on her own accord, told us she wanted to go potty on the big potty - and then did exactly that. Not once, twice!

05/03/12: I am now convinced my supply is just as good as before... I just have a little piggy on my hands. :) I was just holding him & thought, "Man, is he heavy..." He ain't a newborn anymore, that's for sure.

05/07/12: Exhausted. I thank the Lord for giving me a whole month of uneventful nights with Devin & Melanie and I hope last night was just a fluke. They practically tag-teamed me since 3:30

05/08/12: I'm going to go show off Devin to my work today. I'm supposed to go during lunch but I might just go now & get it over with. Strollers & downtown Tampa restaurants don't mix. And we had another rough night last night.

05/09/12: Ahhhh... "normal" night last night. Got my 8 hours of sleep, Melanie didn't wake up at all, Devin woke up once & eventually went back to sleep in his crib - not the vibrating bouncy seat or the swing. :)

05/10/12:
Melanie: Where's daddy?
Me: He's in his room.
Melanie: I'm gonna get him!

05/18/12: Soaking up all these baby smiles!

05/21/12: Sigh... only 2 weeks left with my little chubby snuggler. I don't see why I can't take him to work with me. He's happy & quiet as long as he's in my arms.

05/21/12: I tried to sing twinkle twinkle little star with Melanie but she frowned & forcefully stated, "No, I do it!"

05/23/12: I freakin' HATE tummy time!

05/29/12: For once my supply is more than little buddy bear's demand... that's a great feeling!

05/31/12: Last night I had my chin sucked by a very eager but misguided little sucker. :)

05/31/12: Tomorrow is my last day of freedom. I really enjoyed playing housewife. I learned how to effectively get stains out of clothes, make my own homemade cheese sauce and crochet granny squares. Oh, and I FINALLY finished Mom & Dad's anniversary blanket. Add that to all the baby snuggles I can handle and my life was pretty darn perfect! ...Oh well, back to the grindstone I go!

Devin Photo Shoot

One more thing...

Our computer is busted, so sharing pictures is on hold. Also, please forgive any typos. I'm using my nook to update & it's like writing a story on a cell phone.

I don't mean to brag...

Devin is an angel. He's an absolute angel. Once my milk came in, Devin continued to sleep through the night, only waking up once or twice for refills. :) He only cries when he's hungry or when he hasn't been properly burped. I've taken him out a few times, to doctors appointments or grocery shopping, and he's slept through it all. We even visited Brian at work so he could show off his boy. During a typical day, Devin and I hang out ninny & napping.
As for Melanie, she loves her brother very much. She loves to wave hello to him, give him his pacifier and hug him. We ask what his name is and Melanie says, "Baby brother."
Melanie is blossoming into a very smart big girl. She sings the ABC song completely, sings Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Jesus Loves Me as well. We bought her a kid-sized basketball and that hasn't left her side. She's jumping (and falling) and dancing (and falling, but she dusts herself off). She is a bit temperamental nowadays and I think it may be because I'm so occupied with feeding Devin. We're doung the best we can to transistion Melanie to sharing our attention. We'll get there!

Betsy, Jason, Wil and Elsie came over to meet Devin.  While they were here, we also celebrated Elsie's birthday!

Devin's First MD Appointment

Devin, Mom and I went to see Dr. Hiben on 04/13/12.  Devin wasn't thrilled with the examination, until gave him his pacifier.  Then he was completely content and we all enjoyed the visit.  Afterwards, Devin was all tuckered out and enjoyed a nap!

Sleeping & Sucking... That's What Newborns Do!

Devin's sleep schedule has been pretty darn phenomenal these past two days. I gave him a bottle of formula around 9ish, put him down to sleep. Devin wakes up around 12ish and then again around 4ish. But I'm not about to start bragging yet - we ARE using formula right now, until my supply comes in.
As for that, we're working on it. I think it's stressing me out, which makes it take even longer. Don't you love how that works? But we bought that delicious-tasting Mother's Milk tea yesterday afternoon and I'm about to go make my 5th cup of tea. And Devin is completely willing to do his part to help the milk come in too. :) And when I need a break from all the suckage, he's strengthening his jaws on a pacifier. (I think Devin's used the pacifier more these past 3 days than Melanie ever did!)

Devin's Birthing Story

Devin Malakai Pitt
9 Pounds, 3 Ounces
20.75 Inches
Born 04/06/2012 at 7:20 p.m.

Brian and I arrived at the hospital and I was checked in at 7:20 p.m. Once I was settled in, Brian left to go home to rest & take care of Melanie. The nurse took my blood and popped in the cervadil. So I settled in & just tried to entertain myself until 11ish, which was when the nurse promised she'd unhook me from some of the monitoring systems to let me sleep.
So I was hanging out when Dr. Ashby came in to say hi. We hugged and then she dropped the bomb... My blood platelettes were low and I may not be able to have an epidural. Platelettes of 50,000 is danger-zone, 100,000 is the acceptable minimum for getting an epidural. I was at 70,000. (The blood thinners I took throughout the pregnancy definitely did their job!) So she said to prepare myself for not having an epidural, but using other means to "take the edge off" the pain. And that she ordered another blood work round in the AM just to see if my numbers do improve. I asked Dr. Ashby what my chances were, and she frankly told me it wasn't great. Later I half-joking/half-serious asked the nurse if we could just take out the cervadil & try again some other time. She said no.
So I shared the news with Becky, the only person I knew was awake. And tried my darndest to relax to get as much rest & strength as possible. I "slept" in the hospital bed - it's really tough to get a good night's rest when you're hooked up to so many monitors & I was also at a disadvantage because I'm used to sleeping on a waterbed.
In the morning I was woken up by Kate, a middle-aged British no-nonsense nurse that I knew I'd love because we quickly shared a bond with our love of "Under Pressure" (by David Bowie & Queen). The nurses did a blood draw & we waited for the results before starting the picotin, per Dr. Dillon's orders. Imagine our GREAT relief when we found out my platelettes were at 130,000! :) So I got the pictotin drip started and a delicious breakfast of I.V. and apple juice.
Brian showed up around 9:30ish and Mom and Dad showed up around 11:00ish. We all anxiously awaited the arrival of Devin.
And we waited
... and we waited
... and we waited
It seemed like Devin was still very comfortable in his surroundings, so we made it as uncomfortable as possible for him by breaking the water. Surely he'll come down now!
Tick tock, tick tock. I snuck in a little, itty-bitty snack when no one was looking. I HAD to eat something, darn it!
Slowly but surely I started getting some contractions, but I could breathe through them & I knew I was a long way away from being in active labor. I think I was only 3cm dialated at the time. Knowing how hungry I was, how tired I was, how difficult it was to breathe because of allergies, and how SORE my toosh was for sitting/laying in the bed, I decided to start the epidural around 2:00.
Things still progressed slowly. An hour passed and I dialated an extra cm (now at 4), then another hour passed & another cm down (5cm).
I asked for another dose of epidural drug, as I was starting to feel the contractions again. It was so strange having absolutely no control of my legs, but I thought it was funny. :)
Around 5:00, Mom2 went to pick up Melanie from daycare. We hoped the whole gang would be around for the labor & delivery, so Melanie was coming back to the hospital to hang out with us.
Harry came by to visit as well. I think he was hoping for Devin to be there, but no such luck. So he just enjoyed a picnic-stlye meal with the family (except me, of course. I was just allowed to smell only...).
Then, Kate decided to check my progress around 6:00 and she said I was at 7cm and I'll have Devin before she leaves (which was at 7pm). I don't know if it was something psychological or what but it seemed as soon as I heard that (I received the blessing) things started moving very quickly.
They transisitioned the room to the delivery phase. Dad and Melanie went outside, per the doctor's request. This ended up being a good thing...
So the time had come, Mom had a hold of my left leg, a nurse had my right & Dr. Dillon was sitting in the middle, watching the show. At this time, the medicene was wearing off so I could feel things, more like a pressure that made me want to keep on pushing. I went through about 4 or 5 contractions, Mom said I pushed about 7 or 8 times. When Devin's head came, Mom looked at me & told me that Devin had dark hair. Later, Mom said that Devin was facing down, which usually babies face up.
So Devin was born at 7:20. They placed him on my chest & cleaned him off a bit. Then they whisked him away to finish up the cleaning. The nurses were surprised at how big he was, commenting on the size of his feet & being bigger than the footprint card and taking bets on his weight. He was perfect... and big!
Once the mess was cleaned up (there was a big mess. The bed was new and not as functional as the old beds were & I think some things weren't where they should have been.) Dad and Melanie were brought back in. Melanie instantly came to me & it felt great to be able to hold her without worrying about the belly. She immediately fell in love with Devin and "shushed" him when he started to cry.
So now baby boy makes four! We're so blessed to have him in our lives! :)

Toddler Colds = Snuggly Bears

I hate to admit, but I am totally digging Melanie being sick. I'm sure she's not enjoying the runny nose, sneezing, coughing & fever. But I am soaking in all this snuggle time I'm getting with her. She's so cuddly!
Luckily, her fever broke over the night so she's on the mend.

Saying No to Co-Sleeping

Last night, Melanie woke up in the middle of the night. I changed her diaper and rocked her a bit but when I was lying her down to go back to sleep, she cried out to me. Knowing she wasn't feeling well, I asked if she wanted to sleep with me & daddy. She said, "Yes". So I scooped her & her blankets up, and carried her over to the bed.
Brian reluctantly made room for her and we had her all settled in. Then here's a pretty much verbatim account of the co-sleeping project.
"Hi kitty!"
"shh... kitty's sleeping."
"Kitty sleeping?"
"Yes, now go to sleep."

"Oooooh dark."
"Melanie, go to sleep now."

"Daddy sleeping?"
"Yes honey, daddy's sleeping."
"Shhhhh..."

"Hi kitty!"
"Melanie, lie down and go to sleep."

About 5 minutes of that, I realized there was just too much distraction in our room for Melanie. So I took her back to her room and placed her back in her crib. Melanie wasn't too happy - and she did cry out in protest - but in about 10 minutes, the house was silent again.

Mommy's a Mess & Melanie's a GENIUS!

I think a week ago, I locked Melanie and I out of the car and house. Brian came all the way from work to unlock our doors. While we waited for Brian to come, Melanie and I had a nice walk in the neighborhood. All things considered, a very mello situation.
Well, not today!
I closed the doors & realized my error... Melanie was in the car, but not strapped in. The engine was running and the defrost/heat was on. A cup of hot coffee was sitting in the cupholder (a tasty treat Melanie sometimes gets to sip).
I went across the street & called 911 while my neighbor went back to our driveway to watch Melanie. Once 911 said they were on their way, I went back to the driveway. My neighbor said Melanie was fine but didn't like her peeking in the car.
I stood out of the window, encouraging Melanie to play with the buttons on the door frame, at least to keep her occupied so she wouldn't touch the gearshift. Once she lifted the coffee, but I yelled at her to put it back.
Then she rested her little hand on the key in the ignition, and smiled as she turned the car off. WOWOWOWWOWW!!! I jumped up an down and squealed with delight. She smiled so big - she knew she did something good!
Then the firemen came, and she started crying again with them peeking into the window. So the fireman asked me to keep her occupied in the passenger side while they tried to jimmy the lock on the driver side. So I was talking to her on the passenger side (where she was sitting), encouraging her to press the door buttons but not too worried about it. And you know what she did? That little squirt took the door handle in her little hands and opened the car door!!
Well, I scooped her up, showered her with kisses & praise. She gave all the firemen a high-five & then we watched them drive off.
Melanie is so darn smart! And it's obvious she's not getting it from me...

She's Just So Darn CUTE!

- Melanie sometimes does a little routine where she says, "Okay? Okay!" I must say okay a lot...
- She loves her white socks with the pink bottoms. It's become a necessity with every outfit. And she tells you which foot to put on first, "Right Foot!" then she tells you "Left Foot!"
- She tells you exactly which DVD she wants to watch, "Baby Read!" "Shapes!" "Numbers!" and tells you if you got the wrong one.
- She picks the song I sing to her when going to bed. It's either the ABC song, Itsy Bitsy Spider, London Bridge, Ring-Around-The-Rosie, or I sing my usual, Dream a Little Dream (of Me). She'll yell out "no no no no no" if she wants you to stop.
- If you ask her for help, she'll do anything. She is the household laundress - loading & unloading the washer & dryer and pushing the buttons.
- She's a huge "please" and "thank you" girl.
- In the morning, she picks out her shoes & I put her down on the floor. As I'm finding a hair do-dad, she's off to the living room to grab the comb & wait for me to brush her hair.
- She loves to color, and loves to designate what we should color. She gives me a crayon, points to the paper and says, "circle here!"
- Now that she's more alert to what's going on down there, she says, "Pee-pee!/Poo-poo!" and runs to grab a new diaper from the drawer & hands it to us.
